Every guy needs one. (Maybe more than one.) But there’s an art to finding a jean jacket that fits just right—and you’re about to learn how it’s done.
First, nail the color. Your jacket should be versatile enough to wear with damn near anything. A washed-and-faded blue one, as seen above, will never fail you—it’s pre-broken-in and toughens up every tee in your dresser.
Look over your shoulder. A jean jacket should fit like a shirt: snug in the shoulder. If you’re usually a medium, drop to a small. Bonus: Come fall and winter, you’ll be able to layer it under a coat for extra style points.
Do a hip check. Before you swipe your credit card, make sure the jacket you try on lands right at your hips. If it droops below your beltline at all, please return to step two. For once in your life, shorter is better.
Make it your own. This is the fun part. Pop your collar, flip your cuffs, fasten two buttons or three or zero—whatever feels right. (Though leave the top and bottom ones undone. It’s a jean jacket, not a straitjacket.)
Next Step: Don’t Be So Blue
Once you’ve aced the classic, you can graduate to more advanced colors.
The Master
Memo to Augusta National: The denim gods in Japan make way cooler green jackets than what you slipped onto Bubba Watson.
The Vacationer
Anytime you’re within ten miles of an ocean in the next few months, this is the only jacket you’ll ever need. Go nuts and try it with shorts.
The Downtowner
Gray denim is the new black denim, best worn with skinny jeans, a ripped Yeezus tour tee, and a pair of scuffed-to-hell boots.
